On March 31 1943, the curtains opened at Broadway's St. James Theatre, a single cowboy named Curly stepped onto the stage, burst into song, and a new type of musical was born. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musical adaptation of Lynn Rigg’s 1931 play, Green Grow The Lilacs, wasn’t the first “serious” musical to stand out against the comedies that dominated the 1920s and ‘30s, but it was--and remains today--one of the best. Siri Vik and colleagues explore the short, difficult, and thoroughly intriguing collaboration of composer Kurt Weill and poet/playwright Bertolt Brecht with a selection of songs from their German works from the late 1920s (The Rise And Fall of the City of Mahagonny, The Three Penny Opera, and Happy End), and a full, faithful staging of their 1933 classic The Seven Deadly Sins.
